Research Associate, Sleep and Affective Processing

Requisition Number: RQ-26002
Status: Open
Type: Full-time

Esper Applied Research is seeking a qualified Research Associate to support an ongoing investigation into the relationship between sleep, emotional memory, and affective processing. The position involves the collection and analysis of physiological and behavioral data, with particular emphasis on emotional responses during REM sleep and the relationship between dream experiences and waking cognition.

The successful candidate will work closely with senior research personnel in the preparation, execution, and evaluation of experimental protocols. This position requires a high degree of independence, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to remain objective when working with complex or unexpected experimental outcomes.

The position may involve participation in both adult and pediatric sleep studies, including overnight observation sessions and the collection of physiological and behavioral data using age-appropriate research protocols.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and implementation of experimental protocols involving sleep, memory, and emotional processing.
  • Conduct overnight observation sessions and monitor participants using polysomnographic and related physiological recording equipment.
  • Collect, document, and evaluate subjective dream reports and associated physiological measurements.
  • Assist in the administration of standardized psychological assessments and structured participant interviews.
  • Identify and document anomalous or unexpected responses during experimental sessions.
  • Maintain accurate research records and prepare technical summaries for internal review.
  • Collaborate with research personnel to refine experimental procedures and improve data consistency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, biology, or a related discipline. Advanced education is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a clinical, academic, or experimental research environment.
  • Familiarity with sleep physiology, behavioral research methods, or psychophysiological measurement techniques.
  • Strong observational, analytical, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently during extended or overnight research sessions.
  • Willingness to work with research participants across a range of age groups, including children and adolescents.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background screening appropriate for research involving minors.
  • Demonstrated discretion when handling sensitive research information and participant records.

Experience with polysomnography, REM sleep studies, or research involving emotional memory and fear responses is particularly desirable.

Additional Information

The nature of our research requires occasional irregular working hours, including overnight and weekend assignments. Candidates should be comfortable working in a controlled experimental environment and adapting to changes in research procedures as investigations progress.

Due to the specialized nature of this position, additional information regarding specific research protocols will be provided to qualified candidates during the interview process.
